Commentary on Nippon Decimal Classification and its Significance to Sorting and Cataloguing Japanese Books

Abstract: Nippon Decimal Classification was created early, supplemented and amended several times with a long history. In Japan 99% of public libraries and 92% colleges and universities’ libraries take this classification in their newly books. It followed the Dewey decimal classification system but with more strict decimal accumulation system, fully considering Japan’s social system, publishing customs, research contents to suit the Japanese books’ characters. The study of Nippon decimal classification help to efficient and precise sorting and cataloguing Japanese books, and it’s of great reality significance in sorting and cataloguing Japanese books.
