The Construction of the Union Catalog System for Resource Discovery

Abstract: [Purpose/Significance] Analyzing the function of the union catalog in resource discovery and optimizing the system will help to improve the efficiency of resource discovery services. [Method/Process] By investigating the construction model of typical international union catalogs and analyzing these catalogs' characteristics, a new union catalog system is put forward with the analysis of present situation on the literature resource construction in China. The framework the new union catalog system from bottom to top includes coordination operation layer, system tool layer, data collection layer, data management layer, and data service layer. [Results/Conclusions] The proposed union catalog system for discovery service has 3 characteristics which meet the development requirements in the age of digital publishing. Firstly, the system is jointly constructed by multiple types of institutions, such as libraries and publishers. Secondly, both of printed resources and digital resources are collected. At last, it emphasizes the openness between data, systems, and services. The architecture of the union catalog system will be able to break down the barriers existing in the discovery service and promote the sharing of literature resources.
