Abstract: Just in Time /JIT, created by the Japanese automaker Toyota in mid-20th Century, has been a leading philosophy for both production and inventory management for decades. Libraries in the U.S. increasingly are applying this philosophy to managing collections and services. It is a departure from the more traditional just-in-case /JIC model used for centuries. From selection, to collection building, collection development, and now collection services, the evolution on the terms describing the professional activities surrounding library collections reflects how libraries build their collections at different times. JIT collection services have taken over most libraries in the U.S. What is it and how is it applied? This paper describes the JIT model by practices from the U.S. libraries.

Key words: Just in Time, collection services, library resources, acquisitions, holistic approach, user focus
