Evaluation of Funding Effect on Young Scientist Fund Program of the NSFC in Rice, Wheat and Corn

Abstract: The relationship between funding input and output is related to the performance evaluation, the enthusiasm of researchers and the development of science and technology in china. In this study, we collected the projects funded by the "Young Scientist Fund Program of the NSFC" in the field of rice, wheat and corn from the Internet based Science Information System, and qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed the characters of funded SCI-papers based on the Web of Science dataset. The evaluation indexes, such as percent of projects funded for SCI-collected papers, average number of funded SCI-collected papers for single project, percent of SCI-collected papers authored by project leader as the first or corresponding author, average citations per paper, average impact factor per paper etc, revealed that the researchers in the rice field had stronger strength, the project leaders in the wheat filed had more potential, and the corn field had better efficiency. Analysis of subject and unit distribution showed that the biological sciences subject (76.1%) and the Colleges and Universities (58.3%) were the major, respectively. Each crop has its predominance, and thus the differentiated development strategy should be adopted, on the one side to strictly check the subject in the field of rice, and on the other side to increase the support in the field of wheat and corn discipline.
